Modeling the Effect of Low Pt Loading Cathode Catalyst Layer in Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells. Part II: Parametric Analysis
نویسندگان
چکیده
A parametric analysis is presented using a previously validated 1D model for cathode catalyst layer (CL). The results show that maximum power density at low Pt loading can be maximized with relatively thin CLs (thickness ∼ 2 μ m) featuring high carbon volume fraction (low ionomer-to-carbon weight ratio, I/C) compared to CLs. shift of the optimal (I/C ratio) caused by dominant role local oxygen transport resistance loading, which lowered reduction average ionomer film thickness (better distribution among particles). In contrast, higher porosity and pore radius (lower fraction) beneficial due an increase bulk effective diffusivity despite thickening films. Moreover, performance significantly improved increasing mass-specific activity. effect saturation permeability on lower dry CL composition

Direct Numerical Simulation Modeling of Bilayer Cathode Catalyst Layers in Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells
A pore-scale description of species and charge transport through a bilayer cathode catalyst layer CL of a polymer electrolyte fuel cell using a direct numerical simulation DNS model is presented. Two realizations of the bilayer catalyst layer structure are generated using a stochastic reconstruction technique with varied electrolyte and void phase volume fractions. The DNS calculations predict ...
متن کاملCatalyst supports for polymer electrolyte fuel cells.
A major challenge in obtaining long-term durability in fuel cells is to discover catalyst supports that do not corrode, or corrode much more slowly than the current carbon blacks used in today's polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. Such materials must be sufficiently stable at low pH (acidic conditions) and high potential, in contact with the polymer membrane and under exposure to hydrogen ...
متن کاملModeling transport in polymer-electrolyte fuel cells.
In this review, we have examined the different models for polymer-electrolyte fuel cells operating with hydrogen. The major focus has been on transport of the various species within the fuel cell. The different regions of the fuel cell were examined, and their modeling methodologies and equations were elucidated. In particular, the 1-D fuel-cell sandwich was discussed thoroughly because it is t...
متن کاملNumerical analysis of reactant transport in the novel tubular polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells
In present work, numerical analysis of three novel PEM fuel cells with tubular geometry was conducted. Tree different cross section was considered for PEM, namely: circular, square and triangular. Similar boundary and operational conditions is applied for all the geometries. At first, the obtained polarization curve for basic architecture fuel cells was validated with experimental data and then...
متن کاملF FFC-NMR of Catalyst Layer Materials for Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells
1 H and 19 F spin lattice relaxation rates of catalyst layer materials (CLM) of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells were measured by the fast field cycling (FFC) method. In contrast to ionomer membranes, 1 H relaxation rates of adsorbed water in both platinumKetjen black (Pt-KB) catalyst powder and CLM were strongly dependent on Larmor frequency approximated by a power law due to the strong...
